RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) – Three men are recovering from hypothermia after they were rescued from a sinking sailboat in the Long Island Sound.

Suffolk County police marine officers responded to a mayday call at 7:20 p.m. Thursday from a 30-foot Benetau sailboat called “Tri Colour” about two miles off of Wildwood State Park in Wading River.

The sailboat had become disabled and was sinking amid gale-force winds and five- to six-foot waves.

Police rescued Jong Solano, 29, Frederick Chandler, 28, and Nicholas Condos, 28, from the sinking vessel.

They were taken to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson for treatment of hypothermia and nausea. One of the men also suffered a leg injury.

A U.S. Coast Guard vessel based out of New Haven, Conn. attempted to secure the sinking sailboat but was unable to do so.

The men told the officers they had purchased the sailboat on the previous day and they didn’t think the weather would change so suddenly.

If you can't swim stay out of the water!!
Hey NYC. Please keep your Idiots inside the city limits. Please also do Long Islanders another favor and tell your residents who can not swim to stay out of the water, that would be very helpful. Thank you!
